Here the solar cell IXYS KXOB22 -04X3F is going to be tested in the lab. These solar cell were chosen in a project for solar energy harvesting.
IXYS is a Korean manufacturer, which fabricates small and high-performance monocrystalline cells. The chosen part was KXOB22-04X3F (Datasheet)with an open circuit voltage of 1.89V. The unit price is around 3€. More info about the IXYS product line.
Note that the KXOB22-04X3F solar cell is obsolete (since December 2018. see the manufacturer’s notice), being the part KXOB25-05X3F (Datasheet) the recommended replacement. But I measure and report about the new KOB25-05-03F in this article.
The solar cell is built from monocrystalline silicon, which has higher efficiency than thin-film, amorphous or polycrystalline cells. The size is still small, 22.00mm x 7.00mm x 1.80mm. Further key specifications can be found in the table below.
The test in the lab showed that the maximum power extracted by the cell is 2.7 mW, as it can be observed in graph below at 1.71 V. Later, under direct light conditions, it was measured, that the solar cell can provide up to 1.89V. This is happening because the source LED used during the measurements, were not enough powerful as the direct sunlight is.
Therefore, the direct sunlight condition was extrapolated when designing the model, reaching 3.5 mW, as it can be seen later in power curve below.
I hope this info would be useful for you. Any comments, feedback and suggestions are welcome below in the comments.
